redevelopment of johns green Kilkenny

v1

In 2020, we were engaged by a multi-disciplinary team lead by John Fleming Architects to provide conservation architect input to the redevelopment and restoration of the 18th century former county infirmary site at John’s Green, Kilkenny, an important mid eighteenth‐century structure representing one of the earliest surviving purpose built public health institutions in the area.

Visibility of the protected structure is restricted by the original enclosing wall of the institution. The proposal for the re-development of the site as a 123-bedroom hotel include positive urban design measures to enhance public access to the site including a new site entrance from Wolfe Tone Street that will frame the restored facade of the 18th century Neoclassical breakfront facade while retaining the enclosed character of the site and developing appropriately-scaled frontage to John’s Green.
