The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) (GNRI) was an Irish-gauge railway company in Ireland. It was formed in 1876 by a merger of the Irish North-Western Railway (INW), Northern Railway of Ireland and Ulster Railway.

The location of GRNI’s central engineering works in Dundalk had a huge impact on the town at the time and the development of the area around the train station and Ardee Terrace/Brook Street which form a railway-era urban set piece. The buildings form part of the what is the most prominent example of the distinguished style of architecture using polychromatic brickwork developed by William Hemingway Mills across the GRNI network.

We were engaged to design a scheme of three townhouses in a former garden area within the area which would complement the Victorian-era railway style of the area. The scheme adopts the historic characteristics of the area carried out in a modern idiom including flush planar facades with vertical emphasis and gabled front elevations. The scheme was granted planning permission in January 2019.
