conservation-led design: bermed house, carlingford

Carlingford V05 -2 website low res

We were engaged to provide conservation-led design input to a house in Carlingford located on site situated on the line of a protected view of St. John’s Castle, a significant National Monument. The site is also considered to be part of the setting of the castle and is located on the edge of and on the approach to the Carlingford ACA.

Our approach was create a bermed structure that has no visual impact on the sight lines of the castle from the site. The volume of the linear-plan house has been broken up by steps in plan and changes of materials to that dematerialise the house into it’s setting.
